Secretary of State, Ben Bradshaw, has announced a £10 million investment in English Heritage's new visitor centre at Stonehenge. The planning application for the new visitor facilities is open for public consultation until 12 November.The Government announced in May that the new Stonehenge visitor centre would be sited at Airman's Corner, 1.5 miles west of Stonehenge itself. English Heritage has now revealed the designs for the new complex and Ben Bradshaw, Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, announced the Government's investment of £10 million in the project on 16 October.
The proposals aim to improve the setting for the stones by
> 'removing intrusive buildings and car parking from the immediate vicinity of the site and returning the section of road (the A344) immediately adjacent to the stones to grass, as well as providing a much enhanced visitor experience.'
Designed by Denton Corker Marshall, the new visitor centre should not be visible from Stonehenge itself but will be linked to the Stones by a low-key transit system, fully accessible to disabled visitors.
The planning application to Wiltshire Council for the development in the World Heritage Site is open for public consultation until 12 December. The full application and details are also available from English Heritage.
The CBA is supportive of the proposed site of the new visitor centre, and will be responding to the consultation on the design. We would welcome the views of CBA members on the proposals.
